Snow Week

This week was a snow week in western Washington and we sure do love snow in this house! Tara had all week off from school and CR even got two days off in a row when they closed Madigan, the military hospital (all but the emergency department, of course). It snowed Saturday through Thursday here and while it was fun and pretty for a while, it got to be pretty dangerous when trees started falling and thousands of homes lost power. Our neighborhood was fortunate to only lose power for about 36 hours. It seemed like longer (because our house was below 50 degrees), but really put a lot into perspective for us and made us realize how much we take for granted.

Here are some pictures from what everyone here was calling, "Snowmageddon 2012":

It started coming down hard and fast!
Ty just sat at different windows watching it fall. He was OBSESSED with it!
(notice this nice green tree to the right? Keep that in mind.)
Before we knew it, our yard was covered.
This was our view Wednesday morning - about 10 inches accumulation at our house.
Out the front door.
Backing out of our garage...
Driving out of the neighborhood.
A main street in Lacey.
Good day to buy a car, huh?
Our neighborhood.
The beginning of the tree in our front yard's demise...
Our house (see the poor tree on the left, now blocking our garage?)
Lots of trees down or hanging low!
Being in the Evergreen State when it snows is SO beautiful!
Did we mention he was/is obsessed?
He seriously couldn't get enough!
Some of the teenagers in the neighborhood built this 4 person igloo.
...and then the tree on the left started falling apart...

We also had a chance to hang out with our amazing neighbors, the Fouts Family! I met Carole and her beautiful daughter, Arizona, back in September. Her husband, Ian, just got home last week from a year deployment in Korea. This is Arizona enjoying the snow.

CR and Arizona hanging out.
Thanks Carole, Ian, and Arizona for helping keep us sane and for being up for exploring in this crazy weather. We are blessed to have neighbors are great as you guys!

So how did we use our snow days aside from playing in the snow you might ask? Crafting from Pinterest of course! I had a number of different projects running around in my head that I just had not gotten to yet, so with all of this extra time on our hands, CR and I got to work!

First, I bought a window on Craigslist, a few knobs on clearance at Anthropology, and some fabric and scrapbooking paper at JoAnn's Fabric, which combined to make a coat rack for our entry way.

CR hard at work drilling .
1) The final product!
2) Patched up my holey Toms.
3) Sewed more rosettes on a pillow.
4) Painted the inside of a drawer with chalkboard paint to write our menu on.

5) Decoupaged an "R" with an old KY road map (Thanks Carole)!

And when Ty was forced to come inside and thaw out, he was all bundled up and made cozy.

So yeah, it's officially winter here in Washington, but it's beautiful, we are warm, and we couldn't ask for better friends.

So...That's what's happened in our last week here in a nutshell! Hope all is well with all of you! Stay warm and thank God for all you have...Take care :)

  1. Looks like fun!! We had some snow out here (VA) but definitely not that much! More ice than snow really. I love Pinterest too, and am on there daily finding new goodies. That coat rack looks so cute, if I had a place to put one I'd definitely be on the hunt for an old window. Glad to see you all are doing great! Miss you all!
